What to do in the event of an accident in Germany?

1. Establish security

  • Turn on your hazard lights
  • Put on a high-visibility vest
  • Set up a warning triangle (approx. 50 m in the city, 100–150 m on the motorway)

2. Check injured persons

  • In case of injured persons, call 112 immediately (rescue service and fire brigade)
  • Provide first aid if possible

3. Call the police (if necessary)

  • Dial 110 at:
    • Injured
    • great damage
    • Dispute between parties involved
    • Suspicion of alcohol or drugs

4. Document the accident

  • Take photos (vehicles, damage, road, traffic signs)
  • Exchanging data:
    • Name and address
    • License plates
    • Insurance (insurance data)
  • Fill out the accident report (accident report)

5. Don’t admit guilt

  • Don’t admit guilt on the spot, just record facts

6. Inform the insurance company

  • Report an accident as soon as possible (usually within 24-48 hours)

7. Roadside assistance if needed

  • Request help via ADAC (towing, technical assistance)
